9 Reasons Why Keeping a Routine is Important for Studying

Routines are something that I would recommend to anyone. Morning routines, evening routines, studying routines, you name it!

Some people might not like the idea of a routine though. I am a rather organized person, and I’d always been more controlling and strict than the kids around me when I was a young child. As I grew up I became more organized, which has led me to be a person who adores routines and schedules.

More Bad Study Habits and How to Break Them

We all have bad study habits, myself included. Sometimes we pick them up from colleagues and peers, sometimes from our parents and teachers. No matter the case, and no matter how ingrained your habits are, they can be broken.

Or, more realistically and more easily, replaced with better habits.

It is far easier to replace a bad habit with a good habit, or a better habit, than it is to just remove that bad habit all together.

Generally, habits are formed because they satisfy a specific want or need. While I can’t say which wants or needs your study habits fulfill, I can offer replacement habits and teach you how to successfully replace your bad habits with better ones.

Habits are made up three parts: the cue, the routine, and the reward.

The cue is what triggers that habit. For instance, you may have a bad habit of drinking soft drinks. The cue is your body telling your mind that it feels thirsty.

The routine is the process of doing the habit. Once you recognize that you’re thirsty, you grab a soft drink to satisfy your thirst.

The reward is what you get from repeatedly doing that habit. In the soft drink example, the reward you may experience is pleasure from a sweet tasting drink, or energy boosts from the caffeine and sugar.

Instead of trying to break your habit of drinking soft drinks, replacing it with a better habit, like drinking water or tea will be more effective.

So here are some bad study habits and ways to replace them.
